Say Something!

The Dalai Lama XIVI once said: "If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito."
We are all familiar with bullying.Bullying meets us almost everywhere.  Nowadays, there is an increase in violence and bullying among children and teenagers.  One of the issues with bullying is, what should one do if one sees someone else being bullied?

This is where "Say Something" by Peggy Moss teaches us about taking a stand. The story writes about a girl who sees children from her school being bullied. She describes their feelings while she watches them. Though she doesn't take any action, she doesn't say anything but feels sorry for them until she is being bullied too. The story has a strong message by teaching one to not to be passive but active, and to make a change. The book’s message is to "Say Something" if you see something.

The book is illustrated well colorful, and written in simple English, easy to read and suitable for English learners from 3rd up to 6th grade.

Teaching or reading about bullying is important. .Students need to have the right skills as adults so they can be able to deal with social conflicts, at work, public places etc. "Say Something" presents a great idea, an insight and skills of dealing with bullying, social conflicts and ostracism.

  1. Hi Gal, thanks for writing about this book.
This is such an important topic to discuss with students! An important part of this topic these days is cyber-bullying - it's very important for us as educators to make sure our students are fully aware the cyber-bullying is not different (or even worse, sometimes) then bullying someone in the school hallways.

    1. Agree with Tova that cyber-bullying might even be worse because it can go unnoticed for a long time

  2. Thanks for introducing this book. Bullying is an educational issue we will most probably come across as teachers. Therefor, it's good to have good materials on the subject to use in our classes.
