"Through the Wall" Movie Review

I had the pleasure of watching Rama Burstein's new film titled "Through the Wall". The movie revolves
around the story of Michal Dreamer (notice the symbolic name), a young bachelorette who has a mobile zoo, and is a Ba'al Tshuvaof the Breslov Hasidic stream.
Michal is a real character: She is sassy, colorful, motivated and heartfelt. One bright day, she and her fiancĂ© are sitting and preparing their wedding in wedding hall, sampling dishes from a caterer’s menu. Suddenly, Michal's fiancĂ© breaks off the engagement. Michal is quite stunned by this sudden change of heart, and in her crisis she experiences a revelation: She realizes she is a true believer of God, and she believes that God loves her and has providence for her. So, inspired by this belief she decides to make a pact with God: That she would have the faith that God would find her her-one-true-love until the due date of her wedding, and that God will prevail and find her her-one-true-love on time for the wedding she had already planned. The due-date of the wedding is in 22 days, meaning three weeks and one day. Michal doesn't cancel anything. Instead, she puts a downpayment on the hall, the catering, the band, the invitations, and goes off to buy herself a dress: a dress for her wedding with God-knows-who. This unusual decision sends her off on  an utterly crazy journey to find her future spouse: If it wasn't hard enough to find a reasonable partner in life as an intelligent independent woman, now, with a deadline in a screeching halt, this mission might bring Michal up and close to the border of insanity. What will happen at the end? Was it a smart decision to tempt God? And how intimately can you really get to know a person when the gun of an upcoming wedding is held against your head? To find out the answers for these questions you'll have to go and watch "Through the Wall."

  3. Wow your review is very intriguing!! I wanna go look for spoilers haha!
It sounds crazy, not to cancle everything and marry someone after knowing him for barely 2-3 weeks. Interesting, I'll look into it.

  5. Don't you think that in some way each time we ask for help ,we oblige ourselves to be loyal and truthful in the way God wants us to be? No deals. There is an example. Jewish Hasidic way to "reconcile with God" which aims to make you repent and believe , that what is done ,done purposely, but with great love.

  6. I feel like many times we turn to ourselves to find in ourselves powers to fullfill things that at first we did not acknowledge we can do. I think Michal also puts alot of weight on herself: If she will not find love - the humiliation, the ridicule, the embarassent, the failure - will be / are hers. In the movie, and in interviews with the director. there was much debate revolving the question: Is it legit for someone to "challenge" God or to "dare" God to perform a miracle.

  7. God is creative enough to have his own timing for everything. We may challenge him as much as we want, but the answer we expect rarely is the one we get. In my opinion, Michal is a bit naive, bordering on foolish, but if the Jewish People has made it that far, I guess anything is possible. The true test comes when hopes and dreams are crushed, and often once that happens, we may find ourselves on a road of genuine self-discovery. The more brilliant plots usually come from unexpected twists, quick happy endings rarely do the trick. I wonder what Rama Burstein had in mind when she made that movie.

  9. I should really catch up on recent Israeli movies. There've been so many good ones in the last few years. This one sounds interesting.
I see it has two names:
"Through the wall" is the original title in Hebrew but the English title is "The Wedding Plan"
    www.imdb.com/title/tt5991206
