Read & Listen: Music is the Key

It was another casual Thursday, my shift in Perach was over, and I was waiting at the central station for the bus to get back home. While I was waiting, something weird happened to me.  A band  I never heard of before followed me on Twitter.  I usually do not follow back because they all sound the same to me, but something about the band’s name (Secondborn) caught my attention. Since the bus was late and I had some free time, I decided to check the band’s video clips on YouTube, and while I listened to the songs on YouTube, suddenly, I realized that I was falling in love with their music.

 About the band:
Secondborn is a rock band from Lafayette, LA. Formed in 2013 by Daniel Pinner and Tim Benson, the duo focused strictly on songwriting and fused music elements from rock, punk & post-hardcore bands as well as synthesized sounds reminiscent of late 80's dance pop. Patrick Trumps, Alex Daigle, Stefan Hawkins and Lee Gauthreaux were then recruited into the group in which the band started recording the finished songs for the first record.”      (Facebook)

In 2014, Secondborn released their first EP “A Call to Arms”. The EP includes “Burning the Ships” “A Call to Arms” and “King’s Blood.”  “A Call to Arms” takes the listener to a different place, to a kingdom far away, to an age of wars. The songs range between hope and despair, and the sounds are accurate and enchanting. The guitars and the drums fit together in a very rich and tuneful rhythm along with the expressive and heartfelt vocals to create a perfect and enthralling harmony that carries the listener by stirring his imagination.  The lyrics are meaningful and profound but there is no definite message in them, one can understand them in many different ways.

In 2015, Secondborn released another EP “Symbols”. The sound is very different from “A Call to Arms”. Secondborn do not stay in the same place, and “Symbols” definitely shows how they evolved. The melodies are interesting, while the new sounds take their music to a different direction. Some songs are more dynamic, such as “Say Love”, and some are visual and descriptive such as “When Lions Dream”, “Wolves and Hounds”, and “In winter”. There’s something very distinctive and illuminating in the lyrics.  They tell something to the listener that cannot be ignored. The singing is rich in feeling and impressive. Daniel’s vocal abilities are shown by the way of he raises his voice to high tones and still stays very powerful. “Symbols” shows Secondborn’s talent and the experience they bring with them. The result is a masterpiece as each song leads the listener into a different experience.

In 2016, Secondborn released three different singles. “Take Me Home Tonight” a cover of Eddie Money, “Carrie” and “For the Sake of Safety.”  “Take Me Home Tonight” is an excellent version of the original song. From a boring song, Secondborn improved and made it more rhythmic and dynamic. The outcome is cool and fun song.  Secondborn will not stop and “Carrie” proves it.  “Carrie” presents the other side of Secondborn. The melody is engaging and compelling, and the lyrics are reflective and wistful.  “For the Sake of Safety” is the latest single. The guitars are more intense and emphasized, and its rhythm is fast and catchy.

Secondborn is a great band. They are on a break these days, because they are working on a new album and some new materials.  Despite them being on a break, I still listen to their music, and the more I listen to the songs and the words, the more I can tell that they sing and play from a real and sincere place. The vocals and the sounds fit together into a perfect harmony that makes listening a memorable experience.
